And blazing fast this time. The underlying method is pretty much the same, so following our QuickPwn guide will take you through the way.  All of the downloads have been updated with the correct links to QuickPwn 2.2.5 2.2.5-2 and PwnageTool 2.2.5.  yellowsn0w 0.9.7 was also released.  For those of you that have been wondering why there isn’t a Mac guide yet - it’s coming.  Shortly, actually.

Here’s some tips and pointers before you venture off and start playing with your iToy…

Which process should I use?

iPhone 3G - PwnageTool.  If you are trying to unlock, you must use PwnageTool to create a custom firmware.  This will preserve your baseband and allow you to use the yellowsn0w injection method.  If you’re not trying to unlock and never will, you can use QuickPwn.

iPhone 2G - QuickPwn.  This is what I reccomend for a quick and easy jailbreak & unlock.  The baseband is still unchanged and it is most likely that Apple has accepted defeat and will not update the baseband.

Is it worth it?

In all honesty, I’m not going to upgrade just yet.  In our previous post, you found that there was a fix for Safari and some kind of bug regarding e-mailing photos (which I never encountered).  The BigBoss says if you’re running 2.1 or later, you should be fine. 2.0-2.0.2 have tons of bugs which we all know - crashing issues and for the love of god, if you’re running below 2.0, you’re slacking! Get a move on and pwn that bitch! :)

Windows users

QuickPwn will be ready soon, so if you’re looking to upgrade and don’t have a Mac, just wait a bit.

Today Apple released 2.2.1 - and what this brings up are several questions.

What was fixed/upgraded in 2.2.1?

  • Safari stability issues
  • E-mailing photo bugs resolved

Can I upgrade?

Hold off until the QuickPwn & PwnageTool are updated.

2G iPhone

So for now, absolutely not. The iPhone 2G has the same baseband, but the jailbreak method will require an update.

3G iPhone

2.2.1 will ruin yellowsn0w as far as we know.  It will most definitely not work - the 3G baseband has been updated to 2.30.03.

The iPhone 2.2.1 SDK was just released, so developers can grab it now!

Copy and paste.

Install Clippy from Cydia today. Check out BigBoss’s post for more details including screenshots and more!

It’s going live, and soon. If you don’t remember, let me refresh. It’s an enclosing for the iPhone, kind of like a case. But like the name suggests, it has a controller. Oh, and ZodTTD is going to support it with his emulators and ports (for the most part I believe). Check out the full story here!.

I’m pretty sure they’ve done it.  You guys have been waiting for it and they’ve done it.  As you can see from their original post at iphone-dev blog, this is the “riddle” as we like to call it:

Thermonuclear pop!

* Well it isn’t a British Thermonuclear Device.
* It isn’t an episode from “The Twilight Zone”
* And it certainly isn’t iPhone 3G related (right now)
* There is one other device…
* It fits in your pocket..
* What can it be?

iPod Touch 2G jailbreak. Coming to a software suite near you.

The only thing we know for sure is that it belongs to the iphone-dev team.

We can all speculate, though. Some think it’s the holy grail of iPhone unlocking.  The bootloader exploit for a permanent unlock as opposed to the baseband injection. Some think it’s the iPod 2G jailbreak.

Who knows? We shall wait and see!

We’ll try to keep you updated.  I’m pretty sure theres going to be people buying up <color>sn0w.com now just to feed peoples’ wandering finger tips. They tweet once in awhile, I would check it out.

Great news everyone. yellowsn0w 0.9.6 was just released. It works much better, and in the words of planetbeing:

Well, the new yellowsn0w works on all the SIMs we have around to test it on, at least.

Update from Cydia now!  I’ve gotten tons of e-mails from T-Mobile USA users that stated that my previous post wasn’t working for them.  The Airplane mode toggle would just make the “Searching” flash - like it wasn’t searching at all for a network.  My iPhone 3G is still working perfect, and I just got a new T-Mo SIM today.

Don’t forget to submit feedback to the iphone-dev team about your yellowsn0w experience.

update:

Do not forget:

Toggle 3G off by going to Settings > Network > Enable 3G [off]

My phone still worked with 3G on, but I didn’t test data.  I have the T-Mobile $19.99 total internet plan.

Here’s a short video of yellowsn0w in action. It works much faster than the first version and all T-Mobile USA customers should be happy! Check the iphone-dev team blog for the source URLs to the Cydia / Installer repos.

Let us know if it worked for you!  If you guys are still having trouble, the amazing iphone-dev team have setup a bug reporter/tracker system. It can be accessed here.

Quick Update:

Everytime I reboot the SIM isn’t recognized (it just searches for network).  If you turn airplane mode ON and then off (Settings > Airplane Mode: ON), it will start working.

For those of you that are using T-Mobile in the US and are having trouble getting service using yellowsn0w, we found a tip made by the commenter “Richie Rich” on the iphone-dev blog. I personally tried this after some mishaps and made it work. I’m using T-Mobile in Chicago and it definitely saved me some waiting around for a different or newer solution.

And again, yellowsn0w is a beta product. The iphone-dev team guarentee jack squat except pure “l337ness”.

Here’s a few steps if you can’t get it to work:

  1. After installing yellowsn0w through Cydia, keep your T-Mobile SIM inserted.
  2. You must reset the network settings.  This is probably the most important step.
  3. Reboot your iPhone.
  4. Turn Airplane mode on (Settings > Airplane mode: ON).  Turn it off after a couple of seconds.
  5. You should see “searching” near the top, and this is when the glory happens.

Let us know if this worked for you either in the US or anywhere else in the world.  Keep in mind that T-Mobile USA uses a different 3G network than AT&T, so US iPhone 3G WILL NOT work on the T-Mobile 3G network.  You must DISABLE 3G network from the Settings pane.
